Freezing Time and Bowl Preparation

The freezer bowl must be completely frozen before you begin your recipe. Before freezing, wash and dry the bowl. The length of time needed to reach the frozen state depends on how cold your freezer is. It is recommended that you place the freezer bowl in the back of your freezer where it is the coldest. Be sure to place the freezer bowl on a flat surface in its upright position for even freezing.
Generally, freezing time is between 16 hours and 24 hours. Shake the bowl to determine whether it is completely frozen. If you do not hear the liquid within the bowl moving, the cooling liquid is therefore frozen. For the most convenient frozen desserts and drinks, leave your freezer bowl in the freezer at all times. Use the bowl immediately after removing from the freezer. It will begin to quickly defrost once it has been removed for the freezer.
Reminder: Your freezer should be set to 0°F to ensure proper freezing of all foods.

Making Frozen Desserts or Drinks

  1. Use Cuisinart recipes included in the Instruction Booklet or use your own recipe, making sure it yields 1-1/2 quarts or less.
  2. Remove the freezer bowl from the freezer and place on the center of the base. The bowl will begin to defrost quickly once it has been removed from the freezer. Use it immediately after removing from freezer.
  3. Place mixing paddle in freezer bowl. It rests in the center of the bowl, with the circle side facing up.
  4. Place lid on the base and rotate clockwise until tabs on lid lock in place on base.
  5. Press On/Off switch to ON position. Freezer bowl will begin to turn.
  6. Immediately pour ingredients through ingredient spout. NOTE: Ingredients must be added to the freezer bowl after the unit is turned on.
  7. Frozen desserts or drinks will be done in less than 20 minutes. The time will depend on the recipe and volume of the dessert you are making. When the mixture has thickened to your liking, it is done. If you desire a firmer consistency, transfer the dessert to an airtight container and store in the freezer for two or more hours.
Adding Ingredients
Ingredients such as chips and nuts should be added about 5 minutes before the recipe is complete. Once the dessert has began to thicken, add the ingredients through the ingredient spout. Nuts and other ingredients should be no larger than a chocolate chip.

My grandchildren had fun playing with the ball at the swimming pool. The ice cream was great for a hot summer day. This product is a great outdoor activity.

"Mmmm! Just follow directions!" 2010-08-16
By Katherine Steigman (Austin, TX)
Here's the basics:
- The ice cream came out delicious. I made mine with 1 part heavy whipping cream, and 1 part half and half so it was creamy and the consistency was lovely. The two varieties I've made are chocolate chip/blackberry ice cream, and peach ice cream-- both were great.

- FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS. Most of the bad reviews seem to be because people didn't follow the directions. You have to stop and scrape the sides, add some ice, and continue throwing the ball back and forth for another 8-10 minutes. For those who said they couldn't get the top off, there is a tool that they provide you with if the lid gets too tight. Just read the very short instructions and you should be fine.

- Probably not great for small kids. My boyfriend and I made ice cream with this when we went camping. I have the pint-size one, and it was pretty heavy throwing it back and forth. It wasn't very difficult, but if you dropped it on your foot or didn't catch it right, it would hurt.

"Ice Cream Freezer Ball really works!!!" 2010-07-25
By DesertKat
This product is great. I first found out about it on Unwrapped (The FOOD Channel). I purchased the quart size and it was more than enough for the 5 of us. We took it to the park for a Fourth of July picnic and we really made a hit! We didn't have quite enough ice in the ice chest but was able to get some from the neighbors. It is easy to use. My only reccommendation is to use all half and half, the whipping cream was way too rich. The kids loved it.

"Cuisinart ICE-30BC Pure Indulgence 2 qt automatic frozen yogurt, sorbet, and ice cream maker" 2010-08-28
By Bonnie
We purchased the Pure Indulgence Ice Cream Maker about two months ago and have used it three times to make fresh strawberry and peach ice cream. This machine has made absolutely delicious ice cream every time and has been easy, quick, and fun to use and clean up. Our grandson (and the grown-ups as well!) loves the anticipation of eating ice cream as well as watching the ice cream maker churn. Fortunately, we have the freezer space in which to store the interior freezer bowl so it stays adequately cold allowing us to make ice cream at a moment's notice (assuming the ingredients are on hand). We have not yet tried making sorbet or yogurt. There are so many easy recipes in the book which comes with the machine, and we have made other recipes as well with each coming out wonderfully. What I love, too, is experimenting with recipes, using a sugar-substitute or lower fat creams which makes homemade ice cream even more appealing. The moderately-loud sound that emits when the ice cream maker is working is not disturbing but, in fact, just adds to the anticipation of eating a delicious, homemade treat. The only thing I wish is that it made a larger amount because the ice cream just disappears, but this can be surmounted by making the ice cream in advance of when you need it, refreezing it in another freezer-proof container, and making a separate batch. This item makes a wonderful gift to a loved one or newly-married and especially to oneself!

"YUM" 2010-08-26

Never thought making ice cream could be so easy. Bought this to help get protein in my diet after weight loss surgery. Yes, you heard (saw) me right. I can make low cal ice cream with added suppliments so easy, to keep me healthy. Clean up is a snap too. Great purchase and doesn't take up much counter space.

"Homemade Ice Cream Maker better than expected!" 2010-08-25

"Could be a tad bigger" 2010-08-24
By Claybuster (Eastern L.I.)
Really looking forward to next year's strawberry and blueberry seasons. Only made one batch of each so far and they were quite good. People who complain about the machine not making the ice cream hard enough do not seem to appreciate that it would be impossible to remove the ice cream and paddle/stirrer from the machine if the ice cream was fully hardened. To make a full two quarts of finished product (about 30% air content), I find it helpful to pre-chill the interior of the machine housing with frozen gel ice packs, process about 2/3 of the mix (enough mix to fill the frozen canister to about 1.5" below top horizontal bar of the stationary stirrer) for about 20 minutes or until the mix rises close to the top of the canister. Then, after removing 1 quart of the frozen product, add the balance of the mix and process for about another 15 or 20 minutes.

I like Haagen Daz but prefer to make my own because it permits better control over the sugar and butterfat content; and I get a lot of fresh eggs from a neighbor / friend.

The biggest downside is that the whole process of making a cooked custard based ice cream, including cleanups, takes the better part of three hours. Since the custard mix must be thoroughly chilled (refrigerated) for some 6 or so hours, the entire process of making a cooked custard based ice cream usually spans 2 days. It's helpful to have a 1.5 quart or bigger capacity double boiler for cooking the custard.

"Best appliance I ever bought!!!!!" 2010-08-23
By Selena
I love this ice cream maker. I bought Ben and Jerry's ice cream cookbook for recipies. The ice cream is made in 25 minutes!!! My whole family has had so much fun picking out recipes to try. It really is so quick and easy. The ice cream maker is very simple to use. The maker comes with a recipie book as well. It is used so much I've never put it in my cabinet. It has stayed on my countertop since the day it arrived!!!!
